About Us

The Assumption Nutrition Centre was opened in April 1993, to help the children of the Joza location in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape , South Africa.  It is located next to Makana Primary School in Joza.

The children in Joza are very disadvantaged because of the poverty in the area caused by unemployment. Most of our children are orphans.

They often do not get sufficient food which leads to them being malnourished. Most of them live with grandparents or relatives, which they survive only with the social grant as the source of income.

The Assumption Nutrition centre provides food for 105 and other needs for the children.

Breakfast is fed to the children in the mornings, consisting of juice or tea and a sandwich followed by porridge.

During their school break they are fed lunch at the centre which is a bigger meal. Having very little money to spend on a large family means that for most children this meal is the only big meal of the day.

Cultural activities are encouraged and facilitated for at the centre.

Parents are encouraged to participate and motivate their children,

Sometimes the children have unstable family backgrounds and cannot be supported sufficiently by their families, the centre  provides support where possible.

The Assumption Nutrition Centre sometimes provides clothes and buys school uniforms and other essentials for the children. we provide also after School Club, which focus most in Mathematics and English form grade 4 to grade 7.

The children are very disadvantaged and to support them as much as possible the centre needs donations of clothing, stationery and anything else that can be useful to children.
